The carburetor baseplate shaft spring keeps the throttle plates closing tight. It needs to be held in tight tolerance. When they run thirty to fourty years they wear out the throttle shaft. Then the baseplates rust and corrode. The throttle plates themself can wear also. There is a lot of work to be done on these items
